Margate as a backdrop!

I am so lucky that I get to use Margate as a backdrop for many of my photoshoots and it always has a way of looking different. Can you believe that these shots of Margate were taken this winter? me neither, lucky lighting.

I love standing on the arm and looking at Margates coastline from a different angle. It is one of my favourite places to take photographs, I think you can see why.

First Post of the Year!

Well I haven’t shared much of what I have been doing recently on here but I aim to change that. I have had lots of interesting projects coming up lately and if you want to see more head over to my Instagram account where I share much more frequently. I was really lucky to work with Justauniform doing some awesome lifestyle shots of EsaEvans collaboration jewellery pieces with Laura Alice Prints.

So Justauniform and I took some lovely photos in a cafe (and we may have had a coffee too) and then we headed over to The Turner Contemporary in Margate as I thought the local to us iconic building would work nicely with the iconic buildings of London that Laura Alice Prints and Esa Evans used as inspiration for their gorgeous designs.  Although it was cold we were lucky with the lighting.

Ginger Portrait

Well it isn’t really appropriate for a pet portrait artist to not have a portrait of their own pet is it? My 3 year old son often chastises me that I haven’t drawn Ginger yet so here he is. Pastels on Pastel mat. If you are interested in my works in progress then feel free to take a look at my Instagram account where I regularly show what I am working on.

Bulldog Pencil Portrait

Well I have been MIA for a while due to having a poorly toddler in hospital but now that he is on the mend I am getting into the Christmas spirit and trying to get organised. Here is a picture I finished a little while ago that I thought I would share, Take a look at my art pages if you are interested in seeing more drawings. I couldn’t resist drawing this little guy when I saw him. Black prismacolour pencil drawing. check out my Instagram account if you are interested in my works in progress, my samanthataylorart

Sarah and Nick

Recently I was honoured to be the photographer (along with my husband) for my cousin’s wedding. It was a beautiful twilight wedding at St Augustine’s and such a lovely day. I had great fun watching the bride and her party get ready whilst my husband was with the men. Here are some of my favourite shots from the day, it took me a while to narrow them down!.

Such a beautiful day.

I was lucky enough to attend my cousin’s wedding and I couldn’t resist getting some lovely photo’s. My son was the page boy which made me really proud and it was such a beautiful day. I am finding it hard to narrow down some of my favourite photograph’s for the day so for now here are a few of the stunning couple. I will share some more later when I have narrowed them down.

It has been a while since I have shown any of my artwork and it is not from lack of working but more for the secret projects that have been going on. This month it was Freddy’s first birthday and unfortunately we couldn’t attend his birthday party. As a special gift to him and his parents I did a pastel portrait of him and framed it. Here is Freddy’s gorgeous face and I just hope that his parents enjoy this picture as much as I enjoyed making it. This is made using Rembrandt pastel sticks and Faber Castell pitt pastel pencils on Canson pastel mat. I really loved doing this portrait and am pleased with the finished product, the pastel mat is a dream to work on. Check out my Instagram for works in progress and to keep up to date with my artwork.DSC_8914

Fashion For Lunch Shoot

I really enjoyed the last shoot with Fashionforlunch. We found a great spot along Margate seafront with some fantastically colourful street art. The background worked perfectly with the details and accessories of fashionforlunch’s outfit. It was a warm and sunny day and the light was nicely diffused which provided some great flexibility whilst editing. Fashionforlunch was comfortable and relaxed during this shoot and I think it shows in the photographs.

Introducing a new member to our family.

Meet Ginger, my son’s ginger kitten. Magdalena and Casanova are getting used to him. Cass just tries to ignore him and if he doesn’t directly look at him he doesn’t exist. Maggie is very intrigued by this tiny creature and really wants to play and inspect him however she doesn’t really know how to do this.

Beach Hair!

Here are a few of my favourite photographs taken yesterday from Solarium Point’s Beach Hair promotional event on Margate beach. It was a great day and I got to meet up with some of the local business owners, such as Black Deep and Madame Popoff Vintage, whilst they had their hair braided. It was such a lovely afternoon and I also got to meet up with Justauniform to see her new mermaid hair also by the talented staff at Solarium Point.

Sunny Seaside Shoot.

Well tomorrow I am meeting up with labelsforlunch for a photoshoot and I thought that I would show you guys some of the photo’s from our previous shoot. It was such a sunny day along Margate beach and we couldn’t resist these seaside shots. Let’s hope tomorrow gives us some lovely weather to shoot in and some of those pretty skies to play with. I just love how the bright orange and pinks in the outfit work with the seaside theme of these photograph’s and I especially love the shots outside of the seaside shop. Lots of fun accessories to shoot as always with labelsforlunch’s shoots and it was lots of fun.

Let’s go vintage!

Well after a few weeks away I am finding it difficult to get back into the swing of things but looking back at this shoot has reinvigorated my inspiration and I can’t wait to get back out there with my camera. Check out Justauniform for more details about her outfits and accessories.. I loved how I could change the overall style of these images because of the versatile form of outfit that Justauniform is using here, and those moody clouds are so much fun to play with. Here are a few ways I enjoyed portraying these photographs and whereas I showed you a few of my favourite portrait shots from this shoot before, here I am showing some of the great accessories and outfit shots that we also captured. I adore that braid and I think that it really made the vintage feel to these images and the jewellery is really cute with those flowers and beads.

I do love living so close to the beach and being able to use such a naturally beautiful backdrop to my photography, and every shoot we do looks different.

Speaking of the nineties!

In Justauniform’s recent shoots she has been really flaunting the nineties style and bringing back memories of the fashion styles of that era. The Street art backdrop worked perfectly here with her style and for more information about the fantastic street art that has been going on around Margate recently go and check out Street art Margate’s Facebook community or check them out on twitter and Instagram with #streetartmargate. I love to see all of the new and amazing art that is happening around here and it really is a very inspirational thing taking place. I have used the street art a lot as backdrops for these fashion shoots because I just love how they work well together. I will go back and show you some of the previous street art shoots soon and I am hoping to go around and photograph some of the other works that are around  in the very near future.

Anyway back to Justauniform’s shoot, I love working with these mirrored glasses and have more from this shoot to show you with more of a focus on them. There was a focus brief for not only the outfit but also the captivating braids and nails as well as the gorgeous jewellery. We had so many great photographs from this shoot that it was difficult to narrow my favourites down. I am really fond  of the portrait shots that we captured and hope that you enjoy this colourful shoot.

Time to break those primary colours out!

I thought it was time that I used some of those primary coloured pastels in my stash because with all of the dogs I draw they are hardly ever used. So what better subject that these two Macaws. These were completely out of my comfort zone and feathers are very different to capture than fur and hair, but it was lots of fun. Pastels on pastel paper (although I definitely prefer the pastel mat over pastel paper).DSC_3544

Margate’s Lido Fashion Shoot

We just couldn’t resist the pull of that blue sea and sky for this shoot. Such a beautiful day and the bold red of the Lido looked striking against its naturally blue backdrop. Justauniform’s summery nineties inspired outfit worked so well here and it was so much fun making use of such a large landmark in our shoot. Again there are some mirrored lenses which I love and they reflect back the more the streets of Cliftonville. Her braided hair works nicely here too and the overall feel of these photo’s is a summery day with that afternoon sun just getting ready to set in the distance. A good shoot making use of the natural light and the striking colours around us. Go to Justauniform’s blog to find out more details, she also has fantastic Twitter, Instagram and Fashiontap accounts if you search her name.

What a milkshake!

I would just like to thank MELT in Margate for making my little boy so excited about his milk shake last week. He loved watching you make them and couldn’t wait to try his chocolate milkshake with chocolate sprinkles and a chocolate flake. You may notice two other milkshakes and one might have been mine and the other may have been labelsforlunch‘s. They were delicious and we can’t wait to go back.DSC_3950 DSC_3955 DSC_3966 DSC_3970

Mermaid School

You may remember the glasses shot that I showed a few days ago from this shoot and I have to say that I loved photographing the mirrored lenses. And what a beautiful place to use them, reflecting the sights of the dreamland’s Scenic Railway. The colours of Justauniform’s outfit couldn’t have gone better with our mermaid school backdrop and I think that she really would love to go to mermaid school. This was supposed to be a quick session however we took loads of shots because it was just so much fun. And those glasses just scream for more portrait shots to be taken in other locations. DSC_4001 DSC_4035DSC_4067 DSC_4149 DSC_4150 DSC_4152

Mirrored Glasses

I just can’t resist posting this photograph from Justauniform’s latest shoot. There are more from this one to come but I feel this photograph needs a post of its own. Mirrored glasses are not the easiest to photograph but I love shooting them so much. I find it fascinating to capture the different reflections in them. This shoot was in Dreamland’s amazing grounds and so you can see part of The Scenic Railway track along with those stunning clouds. TDSC_4145he colours work so well together and I really love the bokeh in these photograph.

Magdalena the Tibetan Terrier

Well recently you have seen the pastel portrait of my Staffordshire Bull Terrier that past away and you can all see Casanova’s portraits in the Pencil and Charcoal gallery. So it is only right that Maggie gets her own portrait done. This is pastel pencil on pastel mat and I think it shows her personality quite well. This was a fun one to do with all that messy hair. DSC_3545

Meet the pups.

As you can tell I do love my dogs and I thought that you would like to officially meet them. Casanova is my 4 year old Springer Spaniel, although I don’t think he knows that he is a Springer Spaniel to be honest. Magdalena (Maggie for short) is my 1 year old Tibetan Terrier, who is never the most ladylike of creatures. They are my favourite things to photograph (after my son of course) so you may see them pop up bit. DSC_0999 DSC_2500

A year ago I lost my best friend and cuddliest dog ever. We had him since he was 8 weeks old and he definitely was a huge part of our family. It has taken me this long to draw him again because it was too hard to sit and stare at his picture but I thought that the time is right to draw him properly in colour like he deserves. I chose this pose because it reminds me of that smile that only a staffie has and of his squinty eyes when he is sitting in the sun (which was his favourite thing to do). The hardest image I have ever had to draw so far but I am so glad that I have done it. I am loving the canson pastel mat with my Faber-Castell pastel pencils and my Rembrandt pastel sticks. I can’t wait for my next pastel portrait.

Dream Big

I just loved labelsforlunch’s photo shoot near this dreamland sign a little while ago. I just love how the yellow and gold colours in her outfit go so well with this colourful sign and general Dreamland atmosphere . I had so much fun on this shoot and I think it shows in the photographs. We are so lucky to live in Margate with so many great places to photograph. I am hoping to do more photography around Dreamland, there are so many opportunities. I have used these photographs in my out an about photo gallery so go take a look at what else I have in there. Or pop over to Labelsforlunch’s blog for more info on her outfit and accessories. Dream Big is an appropriate title for this as I am working hard on my dream career right now! I am feeling colourful.DSC_1455DSC_1348

Justauniform’s Fashion Shots

I have been trying my hardest to narrow down a few of my favourite shots from’s last photo shoot and it has been so difficult. I just love how the colours and overall feel of the location worked with her outfit, and how the slight breeze gave movement to her hair and dress. Margate is fantastic for all of these great locations to photograph.

Pop over to her fashion blog if you are interested in any of the items.

Image First update of the year.

It has been a while since I last updated my website, thank you for baring with me. I have just added two special portraits that I completed before Christmas as gifts to my grandparents. It may surprise you that they were not pet portraits but human ones.  They both feature my son and both recipients were happy with their gifts.

21Both are drawn using pencil and charcoal and some white pastel for highlights.

I am still in the process of updating my website especially with my photography area. I have had the opportunity to photograph Siobhan at and have also met the blogger behind and have photographed for her and some of her accessories for her blog. I am getting very excited about my photography and can’t wait to do more.

If you want to see my works in progress and other sneak peeks please check out my Instagram where I am also samanthataylorart.

Bassets are ready!

Hi, just letting you know that I have completed the 3 Basset Hound pictures that will be going to the breeder of my parents puppy, Douglas. It will be a surprise so I can’t wait to hear how they are received. I was working with quite low quality photographs and at times some strange angles but I am pleased with the pictures now that they are done. Here are the three together, from left to right we have Dottie (Mum), Bentley (Douglas’s brother) and Wilbur (Dad). I may take another photo when they have been mounted and ready to sendIMG_6630. If you want to see them better pop over to my pencil and charcoal gallery.

Gallery 1st shoot album up!

Hi everyone I just thought I would write a note to let you know that the album from the justauniform shoot is up. justauniform on instagram has had a few nice messages about these photos so I hope that you like them too. There are also a few new photos on the photography page that I think you may like, so go and check them out.

I have just done a second shoot with Siobhan over at justauniform and I am going through them now and choosing some of the best Pictures that I will put in an album after Siobhan has launched them on her blog. We are arranging another shoot for next weeK I believe. I am really enjoying doing them and learning so much at the same time.

Also coming soon are the three Basset portraits of Douglas’s (Dog in my current header) parents which I am just about ready to photograph and then I have a few more doggies in the pipeline to draw, including 2 Staffordshire Bull Terriers that I am excited to draw.

See you soon!
